Chapter Twelve: Jace
âHey, Jace. Howâre you doing?â
It was Reese, rose-cheeked and bright-eyed, his backpack slung over his shoulder, looking for all the world like the young academy freshman he was, not an omega who had recently given birth to twins.
It gave Jace hope heâd one day have his energy back, and the ability to walk about easily, not waddling as if he was carrying a ball between his legs. At this point, it was hard to imagine. Hell, it was hard to remember that a few months ago he hadnât been like that, that he hadnât always been hugely pregnant.
âIâm all right,â he said, rubbing his enormous bump. âGetting really heavy and achy.â
âYou look good.â Reese grinned at him. âYou look ready. When are you due?â
âUh...â Jace did a quick calculation in his head. With everything that had happened in the past two weeks, heâd somehow lost track. âSoon?â
Reese snickered. âThatâs precise. Then again, when you enter your last month, there is no such thing as precision. The babies come when they decide to come, and thatâs that.â
âRight... How reassuring.â
âWant to grab some coffee with me?â
Jace nodded. âIâll text Marcus so he doesnât worry. I finished from class early and he was supposed to come meet me here afterward.â
They walked together toward the common cafeteria, Jace texting Marcus, listening with half an ear as Reese chattered on about babies and milk and pudding and... potato flour? Huh?
â... and then they were fine,â Reese was saying as Jace put his phone away. âLike magic.â
âMagic?â
âYeah, their little asses were like new after that.â
Jace blinked. What has he missed? âWith the potato flour?â
âWell, yes. Best thing for the rash.â
Huh.
Wow.
âSpeaking of magic...â Reese led the way into the cafeteria and led Jace to one of the window seats. âHow is Marcus?â
âBetter, I think.â Jace propped a hand on the table and lowered himself carefully into the seat. His balance was shot these days, his center of gravity completely off. âHe went to classes today and walked about looking steadier on his feet than I am.â
âBut heâs not cured completely.â
âNo, the shaman said that the rest is up to him. That he canât break the spell, that Marcus has to do it.â
âHow?â
Jace shook his head, worry returning to haunt him. He rubbed the top of his belly to calm the kicking babies. âI think Marcus is asking himself the same question.â
âDamn. Stay here, Iâll get us something to drink. Chamomile tea?â
âThat would be good,â Jace admitted. âMy stomach has been unsettled these past few days.â
âWait here.â Reese was up in a flash, again annoying Jace with the ease with which he moved, and hurried to the bar to order their drinks.
Jaceâs phone dinged with a text and he opened it to find a reply from Marcus.
âCome to the salon afterward, Iâll be there with the guys.â
No hearts or kisses. It wasnât the alpha way, but Jace, unable to resist, replied with a row of kissy faces and hearts and hit Send.
He laughed when he got a reply with a smiling poop.
